18 Ways to lose Weight Without Going On a Diet

By Jude C Wright To lose one pound of body weight in a week, a person must consume about 500 fewer calories than he or she burns each day. Here are 18 ways to lose weight without going on a diet. 1. Instead of drinking orange juice at breakfast, eat a whole orange. You’ll save about 45 calories. 2. Make your breakfast omelette with four egg whites plus 1/4 cup egg substitute. Replace regular bacon with Canadian bacon to save even more calories. 3. Switch from whole milk to nonfat or lowfat milk. Use sugar substitute instead of sugar in your morning coffee or latte. 4. At lunch, use mustard instead of mayonnaise on your sandwich to save 100 calories (per tablespoon) . Eliminate the cheese and save 100 more calories. 5. Instead of a Big Mac and large fries, go for a plain hamburger and a small french fry and save a whopping 590 calories! 6. Don’t eat potato chips at snack time. Have an apple instead for less calories plus the added benefit of more fiber. 7. Substitute diet cola or iced tea for your usual soda. You’ll save 150-200 calories per drink. 8. Eat every two to three hours with smaller portions. Don’t skip breakfast! Eating small, frequent meals keeps blood glucose levels stable and minimizes the impulse to overeat. 9. Eat more healthy snacks like dried fruits and nuts, fresh fruits, cut up veggies or yogurt. 10. Substitute whole grain foods for white bread, rice and cereals. You will not only cut fat and calories, but whole grains have been proven to reduce the risk of colon cancer by increasing the fiber that your body needs. 11. Saute meat, chicken and vegetables in broth instead of butter. And speaking of butter: replace it with nonfat sour cream on baked potatoes. 12. Instead of Caesar salad, substitute a dinner salad with nonfat salad dressing. 13. Do you love pasta? Have spaghetti with marinara sauce instead of fettuccini with Alfredo sauce. You’ll save at least 500 calories! 14. When you’re going out with friends, watch your alcohol intake. Instead of using Coke or Seven-Up with your drinks, choose tonic water or seltzer. 15. Restaurants are notorious for their huge serving sizes. Eat only half of your dinner and save the rest for lunch tomorrow. Or simply share the meal with a friend. 16. Get moving. Walk to the store instead of driving. Walking is the best exercise you can do to lose weight. 17. Get more walking time by replacing coffee breaks with exercise breaks. Also use half of your lunch break to take a brisk walk with a co-worker. 18. Swim, swim, swim. By swimming for just an hour you can burn 500 calories. You’ll also end up with a firmer, more toned body. You don’t have to go on a strict diet to lose weight. Change to more sensible eating habits and start moving your body by walking, swimming or bicycle riding. You’ll be rewarded by good health and a fit body. Fragrant Spring-Blooming Bulb Collection

By Alan Summers This week we have assembled a collection of fragrant spring blooming flower bulbs. We have chosen those that we believe to be the most fragrant of all. It happens that many are heirloom varieties. Ideal for planting in small clusters in little nooks throughout the garden. Several of the varieties are good for forcing indoors also. Grape Hyacinth ‘Golden Fragrance’ A new grape hyacinth with a gentle sweet fruity perfume, Muscari macrocarpum ‘Golden Fragrance’ blooms in April with unusual spikes of soft yellow that emerge from purple buds. The only grape hyacinth with yellow blossoms! Plant in full sun or very light shade. Height is 6 inches. Tulip ‘General De Wet’ The most fragrant tulip of all. A single early tulip that dates back about 100 years, it originated as a sport of Prince of Austria. The fiery orange blooms stipled with scarlet come in April. ‘General De Wet’ grows 12-14 inches tall. Plant in full sun. Of all the tulips, it is unsurpassed for forcing. Narcissus jonquilla ‘Simplex’ The true original jonquil that has been grown since the mid 1700s. It blooms in late April with several small golden yellow side-facing flowers with small cups. They are sweetly fragrant and are borne on sturdy 10 inch stems. The foliage is slender and reed-like. Jonquilla ‘Simplex’ naturalizes into nice little colonies. All narcissus are virtually deer proof. Narcissus triandrus ‘Thalia’ ‘Thalia’ has pure white blooms borne in gently nodding clusters of 2-3 per stem. An heirloom variety dating back to 1916, ‘Thalia’ grows about 12 inches tall and blooms in very late April to early May. ‘Thalia’ is known for its fragrance and prefers a moist semi-shaded location where it will naturalize splendidly. Native to Spain and Portugal. Multiple Flowered Narcissus ‘Geranium’ ‘Geranium’ is one of my favorite daffodils because it is amongst the last to bloom with a nice display of long-lasting blooms borne 3-5 per strong stem. It is extremely fragrant and naturalizes well in full sun to very light shade. Excellent for forcing. A true heirloom, it has been grown for about 80 years. It grows to 16 inches tall. Hyacinth ‘Blue Jacket’ Hyacinths are known to be the most fragrant of the spring blooming bulbs. Many people consider ‘Blue Jacket’ to be the most fragrant of all the hyacinths. They can be forced indoors or can be planted in masses out doors. We particularly like ‘Blue Jacket’ for its strong sturdy stems and its densely filled tubular spikes that are filled with florets right to the top. The flowers are particularly long lasting. They grow to be 10 inches tall. Hyacinth ‘Woodstock’ ‘Woodstock’ combines delicious fragrance with fine spikes of rich plum purple. Hyacinths naturalize in well drained soil in full sun and they are deer resistant. Height 10 inches tall. Click Here to see these and more at Carroll Gardens. Relationship Advice: H is for History

By Jeff Herring There are two kinds of history in a long term love relationship. The first kind is the history you bring to the relationship. The second kind is the history yoy create in a relationship. The history you bring to a relationship All of us have a relationship history. Our relationship history is made up of the relationships we have had, what happened in these relationships, and what we believe we have learned. This kind of history influences who we choose to be in relationahip with, and how we view events in the current relationship. Paying attention to this kind of relationship history can help us choose better partners and not repeat the same mistakes. The history you create in a relationship Then there is the history we create in a relationship. While we want to create only positive history, in any relationship of any length, there is going to be some negative history as well. One of the challenges faced by the couples whom I coach is what to do with this history when you are trying to change and improve the relationship. I think you need to be able to do at three things with this history: 1. Pay attention to the history. 2. Learn from the history. 3. Occasionally tell the history to Shut Up! Here’s what I mean. There are times when a couple or a person is trying to change where history will whisper in your ear things like: “He/she is never gonna change.” “You know you can’t get better.” Etc. This is when you need to tell history to shut up, so you can create some positive history in the relationship. Marketing Folklore 101: Stop Blocking My View of the Potatoes

By Ken Leatherman There is a measurable difference in the world of writing between fairy tales and folklore. Folklore is defined as a set of widely held beliefs that are generally false but have their roots in the truth, while fairy tales are a genre that deals specifically with unrealistic and totally imaginary scenarios and characters. Folklore, although usually starting out with some basis in truth is passed along from generation to generation, with a focus on exaggeration, and a folklore, sometimes called a folk tale, can become almost similar to a fairy tale by the time it’s told several times through several generations. Once this happens, a folk tale sometimes will be called a ‘tall tale.’ This type of ‘tale telling’ is apparent many times in the world of marketing. Although some facts exist, as facts are replicated millions of times over, they take on a folklore-type flavor, and the grain of truth to be had, or the lesson that should be learned, is lost in the exaggeration and the presentation of the marketing principles. A good analogy is a folk tale that started becoming popular somewhere back in the 1990′s. It was passed around almost religiously as a ‘fact’ on dating sites and in guides for single men on ‘how’ to find a ‘reliable single woman.’ It’s very hard to trace the roots of this particular folk tale, but in essence, it encouraged single men to try and strike up conversations with women in supermarkets. This tale implied that more women congregated, and would be willing to answer questions or make small talk about the weather, life in general, etc. while doing their shopping. Well, that’s really a wide generalization at best. Just go to a supermarket and watch the women, especially single women with a few children. Supermarket shopping for many women is a test of ‘how to make the most of the budget while counting calories, and pleasing everyone in the family.’ Now ‘where’, does talking about the weather, and other ‘niceties’ come into play there? If the truth is to be known, most single women are stressed out in a supermarket, especially if they have their kids in tow. They are trying to find the best deals, while poking, prodding, and viewing the supermarket offerings. Then along come these hapless men, following the bad folklore advice they’ve taken to heart, and they try to strike up a conversation with a woman, who for all intents and purposes, is only concerned with the fact that these men are blocking their view of the produce. Marketing is a lot like this. While many truths exist, as marketers, we have to sift through these in order to get to the gist of the materials. We can find our views of the marketing principles blocked by well-meaning individuals that are themselves a victim of ‘tall tales.’ Others can truly believe in marketing folk tales and we ourselves can become swept along, leaving our own intuition in the dust. Getting beyond the marketing folk tales and to the ‘meat’ of the principles, means proceeding slowly and using your own judgment when faced with advice and marketing materials you may or may not have purchased. After all, you can only find the good ‘potatoes’ if you ‘dig’ through the entire basket. Any good supermarket shopper will tell you that. Internet Dating

By Eddie Tobey Who could have ever imagined that finding a special someone, a date or even a friend could be hard these days? Some people will answer that they do find it hard to meet anyone these day, but it doesnt have to be that way. The Internet is the salvation to those who are in search of that special someone or just a friend. Internet dating was established to give opportunities to those people who want to find a compatible person as quickly as possible. It allows a person to meet people online for possible friendship or romance. This online service will ask you to fill out a personal information data sheet about yourself, then search and match it to people with similar profiles. However, these days people have come to fear online dating because of the numerous frauds and scams that has been reported about. Some websites that promise love and romance have turned out to be prostituting women online. Some sites require you deposit money before you can go any further with their services. These sites exist and are shocking, but the same things can also happen at malls, bars and other crowded places. Constant vigilance as applied to real life should also be applied to online dating. Online dating is an opportunity to meet several new friends and contacts. And for the most part, unlike meeting in person, you have complete control of the situation. Individuals can choose how much information they can give out. They can also say yes or no to the profiles that are presented to them as possible matches, and most importantly, they have the power to choose the right partner for them. If used properly, online dating allows you to meet someone who has the same background, values, beliefs, hobbies and other interest as you. The chances of falling for the person because of his or her personality is a real possibility because you are intimate with the person on an emotional and intellectual level before you the physical attraction enters the picture. True there is usually a picture of you that can be viewed, but you dont have to look like a supermodel or a movie star. If your match accepts you from the onset, your appearance was only one of several reasons why. Internet Dating provides detailed information on Internet Dating, Internet Dating Services, Internet Dating Online, Christian Internet Dating and more. Internet Dating is affiliated with Free Dating Services. Burn Calories and Lose Weight with Negative Calorie Foods

By Karla Ruzycki-Davis Since nearly everything we eat helps contribute to our weight gain and calorie consumption it is nice to know that there are foods working on our behalf to slow that process down. Foods that will help your burn calories while consuming them. Sound too good to be true? Well it is not, we actually have at our disposal regular everyday fruits and vegetables to help do just that. Do you want to know what they are? Read on and take a look at the list that will help you enjoy eating while burning calories. Most people don’t know about negative calorie foods because we have been inundated with books, articles and programs that tell us to simply eat less and cut out the carbohydrates. The foods you will see on my list are all fruits and vegetables, which are their own carbohydrates as they have some sugar content, but because of their fiber content, they help our body feel full and burn calories. What does negative calorie mean? Well, simply put it is when the calories burned exceed the calories taken in. While we eat a handful of celery sticks our body is busy working away with both enzymes as well as the physical breakdown of the food. These processes require energy which come from the food you are eating. However, because the food requires more calories for energy to process the actual breakdown than what you have just eaten, it can start to work on stored calories (energy) that you have, helping you burn more calories and lose weight. Continue to enjoy the foods you love, not worrying about the sugar but rather marveling in the fact that you are losing weight and feeling great! List of Negative Calorie Foods Asparagus Beets Broccoli Green cabbage Carrots Cauliflower Celery Hot chili peppers Dandelion greens Watercress Garlic Green beans Zucchini Apples Cranberries Grapefruit Lemon Mango Orange Pineapple Raspberries Strawberries Tangerine Lettuce Onion Papaya Radishes Spinach Turnip Karla Davis is a Certified Personal Trainer who has spent over 4 years focusing on Nutrition and Health. Calorie Estimation – Big Meals Lead to Big Mistakes

By Pat Salber How good are we at estimating the number of calories in the foods we eat? It turns out, if the meal is small, we are pretty good. But if the meal is large, we grossly underestimate the number of calories it contains. Brian Wansink and Pierre Chandon, PhDs from New York and France respectively, designed two studies to look at how accurately people estimate the number of calories in fast food meals. They were also interested in whether overweight individuals differed from normal weight individuals in their ability to estimate calories in meals. The results are reported in an article, Meal Size, Not Body Size, Explains Errors in Estimating the Calorie Content of Meals, that appears in the September 2006 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. In Study 1, the researchers sent trained interviewers to local fast-food restaurants. They asked 150 men and women who had just finished eating to estimate the number of calories in their meals and to provide their heights and weights. 105 people agreed to participate. A little more than half of the participants (59%) were normal weight (BMI less than 25). The rest were overweight. Men and womens estimates of meal calories were similar as were estimates of normal and overweight individuals. What was significantly different was the calorie underestimation of different size meals. People underestimated small meals by an average of about 3%. However, they underestimated big meals by 38%. In the second Study, the researchers asked 40 undergraduate students to estimate the number of calories in 15 different meals purchased from a local fast food restaurant. Each meal consisted of three items (chicken nuggets, French fries, and a regular cola drink). What differed was the portion size of each item. The smallest meal consisted of 3 nuggets, a small (1.45 oz) order of fries and a 10 oz cola. The largest meal was 12 nuggets, 5.8 oz of fries, and a 40 oz cola. The rest of the meals were different combinations of the different portion sizes of the same items. The meals ranged from 445 calories to a whopping 1780 calories. Similar to Study 1, they found that the undergrads were very good at estimating calories of the small meals, but they underestimated the 7 largest meals by a mean of 23%. Again, there was no difference between normal and overweight people in their ability to estimate calories. Now here is the punch line: Although normal and overweight individuals were similar in their ability to estimate the number of calories in food, the overweight individuals in Study 1, who had eaten a fast food meal, ate larger meals. Because everyone significantly underestimates the number of calories in large meals, these overweight people actually ate many more calories than they thought they had. An analysis of the data in these two studies showed a meal that increased in calories by 100%, was only thought, by the participants, to have increased by 50%. Whew, thats a big mistake that can really impact the bottom line aka the waistline. The authors had several suggestions on ways to improve an individuals ability to estimate calories. One was to have fast food restaurants clearly post calorie content on the meal servings themselves, as opposed to just being available somewhere in the restaurant or on the companys website. Another was to provide people with an idea of what a portion-size should be (e.g., 3 chicken nuggets or an amount of fries equal to the size of your fist). An interesting option they propose takes advantage of what they learned from the data in this study. Since people can accurately estimate the calories in small amounts of food, they should estimate the amount of calories in a large meal by estimating the calories in each item (chicken nuggets, fries, cola) and then adding them up to get the total. Whether this works or not, of course, will have to be tested. But if it does, it will be one more tool that we can use to help us ensure that our daily calorie intake stays in a range that allows us to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. How To Stretch Your Student Loan

By Rachel Lane If youre considering going to university, there is a strong chance that youre also contemplating taking out a student loan to fund your university expenses. Student loans dont have to equate to student debt and if you plan your finances, it is possible to get by without student loans and possibly even profit from them. There are many sites on the internet which provide downloadable student finance guides and online advice on how best to manage your finances. Moneynet offers a comprehensive student finance guide whilst the money section on support4learning is also a popular internet resource. The first step to avoid financial dependence on a student loan is to consider taking a gap year to gain experience and earn money. This is a great opportunity to start saving for university and will give you funds to cover accommodation and bills without tapping into your student loan. In terms of managing your personal finances, you could open up a notice savings account and invest your gap year earnings alongside a student loan, accruing interest on the total amount, but being disciplined so that you only ever tuck into your savings not the loan itself. If youre comfortable that you can timetable it you might consider a part-time job to help finance your studies, using your income to cover the majority of your expenses so that you can leave your bank savings alone. There will be times when you may have to make a withdrawal from your savings account, but if you leave the capital there as long as possible the more money you will make. If youre concerned about getting the maximum amount of interest on your loan, you could try doing a savings comparison search on the internet. Sites such as moneynet.co.uk ( http://www.moneynet.co.uk/banking-saving/index.shtml ) and reviewcentre.com ( http://www.reviewcentre.com/products2312.html ) allow you to compare different accounts alongside each other. If you keep a tight grip on your finances, then it is likely that you will be in a strong position to pay off your loans when you graduate. Whilst studying, you might also be interested in conducting price comparison research for insurance and current accounts to ensure youre getting the best deals. Dont be seduced by high street offers of freshers fair promotions collect as much information as you can, so you can make an informed financial decision. Its also worth setting yourself up with online accounts which you manage through an account aggregation tool. Account aggregation allows you to manage your money online and can save you time, foot leather and bank charges. Employment – Claims – Overseas Worker

By Rosanna Cooper In the case Saggar v Ministry of Defence [2005], it was held that an overseas based employee of a British business, who was a UK resident when recruited or at any time during the course of the employees employment, is entitled to bring a discrimination claim in the UK. The claim can be brought even if the employee did no further work in Britain after the move overseas. After 16 years at a Ministry of Defence base in Britain, Lieutenant Colonel Surinder Nath Saggar was permanently stationed in Cyprus from 1998 and was still there when he made a claim for race discrimination. The Employment Tribunal decided that Lieutenant Saggar worked wholly outside Britain and could not file a race discrimination claim in Britain. He appealed against this decision to the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT). The EAT dismissed the appeal and held that:- ▪ In order for Lieutenant Saggars claim to succeed, the EAT would have to look at the whole of his employment from 1982 onwards, and that would be absurd; ▪ The EAT was bound by the decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of Carver v Saudi Arabian Airlines [1999] where for the purposes of establishing whether or not a tribunal has jurisdiction to hear a claim, it is necessary to consider whether, at the time of the alleged discrimination, the claimant was wholly or mainly working in Great Britain; ▪ Accordingly, at the time of the alleged discrimination, Lieutenant Saggar worked wholly in Cyprus. The case went to the Court of Appeal and it was decided that: – ▪ The relevant period for determining whether a claimant worked wholly or mainly outside Great Britain is the whole period of employment; ▪ This approach was supported by the wording in s 8(1) of the Race Relations Act 1976; and ▪ This decision applied equally to all employees even though a person serving in the Armed Forces is not an employee as there is no contract of service. The matter was remitted to a different tribunal to determine the issue of jurisdiction in accordance with the Court of Appeals judgment. Comment: This is a significant decision in favour of employees. This means that in many cases where employees are posted abroad they are entitled to bring employment claims in the UK. In practice, as well as complying with the rules of the country where employees are working, it would be sensible for employers to apply English employment law standards as well. Get Fit With Fitness Goals

By James Penn Setting up fitness goals is the first step towards reaching them. Because as the saying goes, Fail to plan, plan to fail. So lets learn more about goal setting so that you can reach your fitness goals. Benefits of Goal Setting For even more incentive to set goals, check out the additional benefits you can get. First of all, you can raise your self-confidence because you set out to do something and worked towards goal. And you increase you motivation, pride and self satisfaction in a job well done. Plus you improve your life and have a new achievement to chalk up. And you came, you saw, you conquered yet another difficult challenge, something that was holding you back and making you sad. And check out the facts. Effective goal setters reportedly boast more self-confidence, focus and concentrate better and have less stress and anxiety. And overall they are happier and lead more productive lives. Goal Setting Steps To simply state unplanned goals, though, is unwise. For example, if you list a goal like, I am going to be 70 lbs. lighter this time next year. This is too vague and you could be setting yourself up for failure. Effective goals start with education. In other words, the goal setter has researched the details involved in order to complete the goals, and then set up specific step-by-step action plans with timed tasks along the way that are measurable in order to note progress along the way and success or failure with each. Research and Development Begin your fitness education by checking out some of the latest health and fitness books from your local library. Ask your reference librarian for help. While youre there, check out some of the latest health and fitness magazines like Fitness, Shape, Mens Health and Fitness RX for Women. Also before setting up a fitness program, its a good idea to check with your physician first. He or she can help guide you in choosing a program thats just right for your needs. To help with choosing a good fitness program and plan to follow, you need to consider a few things. Cost is important, so make sure any home fitness equipment and fitness program fees and extra costs like exercise videos and special foods, snack bars, shakes, monthly gym memberships and exercise class fees fit into your family budget. There are a few things you can do to help with costs. Call the gym to see if they publish coupons and where to get them. Ask about special campaigns they may have like 10% off plus no registration fee for AAA (American Automobile Association) members. Check eBay for discounted equipment and bulk snack bar and shake purchases. And network online at MySpace.com and through popular fitness forum to find which gyms are best for what you want to do in your area plus for other food, equipment and other discount resources. Many people sell their used fitness equipment, so you may save some money buying used. When youre finished with all your research, start setting positive fitness goals and steps to reach them based upon your findings. See what the average weight loss is, for example, over how long of time and what it takes to get there. Then establish your goals and get moving. Download your free report entitled “Powerful Weight Loss Strategies” and discover how to lose weight naturally and easily. Also, be sure to download your bonus free report and discover how to get six pack abs quickly and easily.
